Cloudy water, green pools, chemical levels that never sit right, an energy bill that keeps climbing. These are the pool questions we field most often. Below is a straightforward breakdown of what causes each one and what to do about it.

01 Cloudy or Hazy Pool Water

pH drifting out of range, low chlorine, a blocked filter or high calcium hardness are the usual culprits. Often it is a combination of two or three at once rather than a single cause.

What to do

Test pH, chlorine and alkalinity. Correct any levels that are off and run the filter for 12 to 24 hours. A pool clarifier can help gather fine suspended particles so the filter removes them more efficiently.

02 Green Water and Algae

Algae takes hold when chlorine drops or pH climbs above 7.8. At that point chlorine loses most of its effectiveness and algae can spread noticeably within 24 hours, particularly in warm weather.

What to do

Brush walls and floor to loosen algae. Shock the pool with a high chlorine dose, making sure pH is between 7.2 and 7.4 first. Run the filter until the water clears completely before reducing chlorine back to normal levels.

03 pH and Chlorine That Keep Drifting

Bather load, rainfall, sunlight and the type of chlorine used all shift pH in different directions. Adding chemicals on a fixed schedule rather than testing first is the main reason levels stay inconsistent.

What to do

Test two to three times a week and after heavy use or rain. Dose in response to actual readings. Keep total alkalinity between 80 and 120 ppm as this acts as a buffer and slows pH movement between tests.

04 Running Costs Higher Than Expected

A filtration pump running at full output through the night uses a significant amount of electricity for no practical gain. Most standard setups run at the same rate around the clock regardless of whether the pool is in use.

What to do

Set the pump on a timer and drop circulation hours overnight. Variable speed pumps use considerably less energy at lower output settings. Over a full season the difference on your electricity bill adds up quickly.

All four of these problems come down to the same thing — water chemistry changing faster than manual testing and dosing can keep up with.

The Bayrol PoolManager® System

The Bayrol PoolManager® measures pH, chlorine activity and water temperature around the clock. When a level moves outside the set range, it doses the correct chemical in the correct amount. No test strips, no guesswork, no waiting until you notice something looks wrong.

What it does?

  • Continuous pH, ORP and temperature monitoring
  • Automatic dosing of chlorine, bromine or active oxygen
  • Controls filtration, heating, lighting and pool features
  • Reduces pump output overnight to lower energy use
  • Email and phone alerts when readings go out of range
  • Remote access via smartphone, tablet or PC
  • Available in chlorine, bromine and oxygen versions
